Mumbai is often considered to be the city's greatest marketplace and is full of shopping opportunities. With some of the best shopping to be found anywhere in India, Mumbai is home to everything from shopping malls and arcades, to markets, bazaars and street hawkers. For traditional silks and sarees in Mumbai, both Queens Road and Maharishi Karve Road are great places to find some authentic Indian souvenirs.

Whilst most of the largest shops in Mumbai will happily accept credit cards, a number of the smallest shops are cash only, so do bear this in mind when you are shopping for souvenirs of your holiday. The shopping laws in India have been relaxed in recent years and an increasing number of shops are now beginning to open on Sundays. However, Sunday is generally a fairly quiet day on the shopping front and Saturday is the time that most people take to the streets around Mumbai city centre.

Prices in Mumbai tend to be slightly higher than other prominent Indian cities, although most goods are still considered fairly cheap when compared to Western countries. Many of the most popular shops can be found along Colaba Causeway and lining many of the adjacent streets. When shopping in this part of Mumbai you will find the many street hawkers hard to miss, and this area at times can be a good place to purchase cheap, slightly tacky gifts.

Many street stalls and market traders are located along Dr. Dadabhai Naoroji Road, close to the Flora Fountain. Here you will find a range of electrical goods, designer gear and some pirated DVDs and CDs. Further shopping opportunities lie along MG Road, in the very heart of Mumbai, with the stretch between Azad and Cross areas known as the 'Mumbai Shopping Street', due to its concentration of clothing stalls and high-street fashion outlets. For the best prices, do be prepared to haggle.

Those looking for traditional curios and antiquities should head to Mumbai's Merewether Road, which is sited behind the eye-catching Taj Mahal Palace and Tower. Prices here are not particularly cheap, although in most cases, the quality of the goods for sale are excellent. For a spot of traditional Indian bric-a-brac, the Chor Bazaar along Grant Road and Mutton Street is always worthy of some time.
