Mumbai Landmarks and Monuments: View of the Haji Ali Dargah (Haji Ali Mosque)As you would expect in such a prominent Indian city, Mumbai is filled with more than its fair share of historical landmarks, monuments, mosques and temples, featuring a mixture of Art Deco and more colonial architecture. Particularly eye-catching landmarks include the Gateway of India, the Mahalaxmi Temple and also the Rajabai Clock Tower, which is located within the Mumbai University campus.

Other notable landmarks in Mumbai include the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, which enjoys a scenic waterfront setting and is one of the city's most famous hotels. The main landmarks are described below.

The Haji Ali Dargah was actually built in the ocean, being joined to the mainland by a narrow pathway, which is more than 400 metres / 1,312 feet in length and can only be used during times of low tide. Mumbai's Haji Ali Dargah features a solitary minaret and magnificent marble courtyard, where you will find the central shrine.

Mumbai's iconic Gateway of India lies on the southern side of the city, close to the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower. The gateway was opened in 1924, although stopped being used some 20 years later. This has become a favoured gathering spot, attracting large crowds, who come here to enjoy the atmosphere, street entertainment, photographers, giant-balloon sellers, pleasure boats and horse-drawn carriages.

This famous Hindu landmark is one of Mumbai's busiest and most notable temples, being dedicated to the Indian goddess of wealth (Mahalaxmi). The Mahalaxmi Temple hosts a number of religious events and is the focus for the city's popular Festival of Nine Nights (Navratri), which takes place each October as part of the Deepavaali celebrations.

The majestic Taj Mahal Palace and Tower is an especially important local landmark and located along the Apollo Bunder, next to the harbour. Built more than 100 years ago, at the turn of the 20th century, the palace faces the equally impressive Gateway of India and is one of the city's most luxurious hotels, with more than 500 guest rooms. Look out for the grand central staircase, which is worth a look if you are visiting one of the palaces restaurants.

Built at the very end of the 19th century and known for its tall tower, which is more than 76 metres / 250 feet in height, the historic Mumbai Municipal Corporation offers good views across the city. Featuring Gothic-style architecture and dominating the area, the building features a series of domed roofs, each of which is topped with a cross.

A particularly affluent part of Mumbai, Malabar Hill contains a number of top tourist attractions, such as the Hanging Gardens, Kamala Nehru Park and also the Parsi Tower of Silence. Situated on the northern side of the Back Bay, Malabar Hill is known for its breathtaking sea views, also being home to both the Babulnath Mandir Temple and the Walkeshwar Temple.

One of the city's most famous landmarks, the grand Rajabai Clock Tower is hard to miss. Dating back to the 1870s, the tower is almost 91 metres / 300 feet in height and home to a large library, with four separate clock faces and many surrounding palm trees.

Located on the southern side of Malabar Hill, the Babulnath Mandir Temple is a particularly beautiful building, built during the latter part of the 18th century. This temple attracts huge numbers of visitors each year, who come to pray, or simply enjoy its detailed architecture.

With views across Horniman Circle and beyond, the Asiatic Society Library (Town Hall) is home to a large and extensive collection of books. Its Victorian-style facade dates back to the 1830s, while inside, not only will you find many important local documents and artefacts, but a series of impressive marble sculptures are on display.
