 Mumbai is known for its expensive accommodation, with hotels being especially pricey during the Diwali festival in October or November, and also in the busy Christmas season. Whilst budget accommodation is generally available around Mumbai, you can expect to pay more for your room than in other Indian cities.
For accommodation with a difference and a true taste of life in Mumbai, consider lodging with a local family. A popular alternative to mainstream hotels in Mumbai, an increasing number of families throughout the city are now offering rooms, with a list of those participating in this scheme being readily available from the Government of India Tourist Office on Maharshi Karve Road.
Most hotels in Mumbai will expect you to checkout of your guestroom by midday, although they will usually offer a convenient luggage storage service for a small charge. This is particularly useful should you have a later flight time.

The Colaba area of Mumbai offers the best selection of accommodation, with a good choice of both budget and mid-range hotels on offer here, on Arthur Bunder Road, Battery Street, Garden Road, Henry Road, Oliver Road, Mereweather Road and Nawroji F Road amongst other locations. This is a particularly vibrant neighbourhood and well placed for sightseeing and exploring the city.
Hotels are also in plentiful supply around Mumbai's Fort area, being close to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and Churchgate train stations. Accommodation around Fort is clustered around City Terrace, Marzaban Road, P D'Mello Road, Rustom Sidhwa Marg, Sai Baba Marg and Shri Shiv Sagar Ramgulam Marg.
 Those staying in Mumbai on business will find a number of reasonably priced hotels surrounding Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, where both mid-range and luxury accommodation is located, also suiting travellers on a stopover. You will also find a helpful hotel reservation counter within the arrivals hall of the airport itself, with staff on-hand 24-hours-a-day to help you find accommodation in Mumbai to suit your needs and requirements. The suburb of Vile Parle is particularly close to Mumbai's domestic airport, although the accommodation here is rather basic and quite pricey, being sited along Nehru Road.
At the top-end, many of the best hotels in Mumbai lie on Marine Drive in the Churchgate area and alongside Nariman Point. Well-known brands in this area offer a high standard of accommodation and include InterContinental, Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott. However, for something a little special, the spectacular Taj Mahal Palace and Tower on Apollo Bunder, in Colaba, is quite unbeatable, with stunning views of the Mumbai cityscape, restaurants, shops, swimming pools, a fitness centre and even its own nightclub.
