Although Mumbai's coastline doesn't boast the cleanest waters and best beaches, many stretches are suitable for a range of water sports, such a water skiing, sea kayaking, parasailing and also wind surfing. Girgaum Chowpatty Beach is amongst the best spots for water sports in Mumbai and also features pleasure boats, which cruise around the bay and allow you to appreciate the city from a distance, being especially popular at sunset.
Also located on the region's western seaboard, Juhu Beach features a backdrop of many luxury hotels and is also busy with its human-powered fairground rides, which are a firm favourite with children. Other popular beaches in the Mumbai area include the Aksa, Dadar Chowpatti, Gorai, Manori, Marvé, Versova and also Madh Island. One of Mumbai's leading tourist attractions, Chowpatty Beach is a favoured evening spot for families and features a collection of stalls, selling many tasty local delicacies. Chowpatty Beach is southern Mumbai's only sandy stretch and is at its busiest during the Ganesh Chaturthi Festival each September, when crowds gather to join in the celebrations.

Marvé Beach lies on the western side of Mumbai, in the Malad suburban district. Amongst the main attractions here is the adjacent Essel World theme park and its many fast rides.

Juhu Beach lies approximately 25 km / 16 miles to the north of central Mumbai, being regularly frequented by the locals, who flock here to enjoy the views and the pleasant sea breezes. The beach itself is often crowded at the weekend and filled with street vendors, food stalls and hawkers, creating a fun atmosphere.

Madh Island is a small and charming village and can be found to the north of Mumbai city centre. Despite being referred to as an island, Madh is actually a peninsula and offers an appealing coastline next to the Arabian Sea. This is known for being an affluent area, with highlights including the historic Madh Fort.

Sited within the suburb of Andheri, Versova is a popular beach village and home to a thriving fishing industry. Much of the shoreline is rocky and the waters can be rough at times. Whilst amenities at Mumbai's Versova Beach are fairly basic, it is a firm favourite with the locals.

The Great Escape Water Park is located within the Majivali Village and just over 35 km / 22 miles from Mumbai. Covering some 25 acres / 10 hectares, expect to find fast water slides, a children's pool, water fountains, lawned areas and a number of themed restaurants.
